The CoC grants provide funding to help individuals and families experiencing homelessness move into permanent housing with access to supportive services, with the overarching goal of long-term stability. Last year, with the help of U.S. HUD funding, the Homeless Trust placed 7,635 formerly homeless adults and children into permanent housing.
Included in the award is funding for three (3) new projects totaling more than $3.8 million which will provide housing for an estimated 135 households, or 284 people, including new units for survivors of domestic violence.
- Northside Commons
Carrfour Supportive Housing’s Northside Commons is permanent housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The project, which includes both scattered site and project-based units, will assist 41 households, or 51 people, with rent and supportive services, including financial stability services, behavioral health services and peer support. The Northside Commons project includes 25 Housing Choice Vouchers (HCV) committed by the Housing Authority of the City of Miami Beach in partnership with the Homeless Trust. - Miami-Dade County Rapid Rehousing and Domestic Violence Project
Miami-Dade County Community Action and Human Service’s Rapid Rehousing and Domestic Violence Project will serve 57 households, or 105 people, fleeing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking and human trafficking, including 32 families, 20 unaccompanied adult and 5 unaccompanied youth. The project will provide short- to medium-term rental assistance with supportive services, including safety planning. - Transitions to Homeownership Expansion (THOP Expansion)
Carrfour Supportive Housing’s THOP Expansion is a rapid rehousing program to provide persons fleeing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. The project will serve 37 households, or 128 people, fleeing domestic violence with rental assistance allowing them to move quickly and safely to housing in the community with support services to address their needs and enable them to rebuild their lives.
“Access to stable housing is a basic necessity,” said Ronald L. Book, Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust. “These new resources from U.S. HUD will enable us to house and serve extremely vulnerable households in our community at a time when safe, stable and affordable housing is so hard to find. These projects also reinforce Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s commitment to the federal House America initiative which includes ambitious goals to rehouse people experiencing homeless and add new units of supportive housing to the development pipeline.”
The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust is the lead agency for Miami-Dade County’s homeless Continuum of Care and designated as the collaborative applicant to submit for grant funding on behalf of the CoC. In its role, the Homeless Trust coordinates housing and services for people experiencing homelessness in Miami-Dade County. The CoC is committed to incorporating a Housing First approach across its programs, recognizing that everyone can achieve stability in permanent housing, with the right supports, and that housing stability provides the foundation people need to improve their health and well-being.
“Our most recent census indicates 970 unsheltered people are experiencing homelessness in Miami-Dade,” said Chairman Book. “With consistently fewer than 1,000 people on our streets, Miami-Dade is positioned like no other large urban area to further reduce homelessness by making swift, strategic investments in extremely low income and supportive housing stock.” Landlords or property owners interested in partnering with the Trust are encouraged to call 305-349-RENT.
U.S. HUD’s CoC program is designed to promote a community-wide commitment to the goal of ending homelessness. The program is the largest source of federal grant funding for homeless services and housing programs servicing people experiencing homelessness.
