As shortage continues, Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust turns to South Florida residents to help provide 3,400 masks and/or cloth face coverings for area homeless
"Masks for Miami-Dade’s Homeless" is launched; drop-off locations at area public libraries
(April 17, 2020) – As the shortage of masks and face coverings continues, the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust is appealing to residents to help donate masks and/or homemade face coverings for individuals who are experiencing homelessness. An estimated 3,400 face coverings are needed to align with the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) recommendations and local emergency orders. The Trust is working in collaboration with organizations and volunteer groups to meet these new demands, but need as many volunteers as possible, as commercially produced masks are limited in supply and are being prioritized for healthcare professionals.
“Our priority is meeting CDC guidelines and the Mayor’s Emergency Order which is why we are reaching out to the community for their help,” said Chairman Ron Book. “We simply can’t do this alone. Our continuum of care is focused 24/7 on COVID-19 mitigation. Masks and cloth face coverings are one of the big missing links. If the community can step in, then we can focus our energies fully on the enormous number of other priorities resulting from this pandemic.”
The Trust is asking organizations like churches, synagogues, mosques, and community-oriented school clubs to step up and be part of “Masks for Miami-Dade’s Homeless.”
The Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) has teamed up with the Homeless Trust and is providing five drop-off locations. Clean, newly fashioned groupings of 10 or more sewn or non-sewn masks and/or face coverings can be deposited in collection boxes at any of the following library locations:
