Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust Launches "Strike Force: Urban Core"
Pilot program leverages proven programs to house homeless in 42-block radius of downtown Miami
The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust is launching a new pilot program called “Strike Force: Urban Core” aimed at helping downtown Miami’s hardcore homeless population. The program, created by the Homeless Trust and involving city and county partners and business associations, is a 90-day effort to house all the homeless identified inside a 42-block radius of downtown Miami.
“The Homeless Trust is laser focused on making large-scale, long-term impact on homelessness in Miami,” said Chairman Ronald L. Book. “The ‘Strike Force: Urban Core’ program was conceived as a targeted way to change the landscape of our city streets. This will demonstrate the impact permanent housing options can have on the homeless. After all, we know housing the homeless regardless of a person’s situation is the best investment we can make towards ending the cycle of homelessness. We are eager to put boots on the ground and launch.”
The program will work like this: The Homeless Trust will organize a one-day registry in September to blitz an area to identify and record every homeless person encountered. For the next 90 days, outreach teams will develop housing and service plans for each person encountered on registry night. The goal is that every homeless person identified will be placed in either Permanent Supportive Housing or Rapid Re-housing allowing access to services and medical care specific to each person’s needs.
“Strike Force: Urban Core” was approved by the Homeless Trust Board of Directors July 24, 2015. Assuming a high rate of success, the Strike Force concept can be applied to other areas of Miami-Dade County.
