Homeless Awareness Day is November 5, 2015

November 5, 2015 is Homeless Awareness Day in Miami-Dade County. Hosted by the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, the day is designed to create social change by educating the community about homelessness in fun and unique ways. Events will be held all day, all over Miami-Dade County. Here is a sampling:

From Homeless to Housed: State of Homelessness Business Breakfast
PortMiami, Terminal G
8 a.m. till 9:15 a.m.

This invitation-only business breakfast is a platform for the Homeless Trust to formally update business leaders and elected officials about the status of homelessness and the goal of ending veteran and chronic homelessness.

High School Rally
St. Thomas University, Fernandez Family Center
16401 NW 37th Avenue, Miami Gardens
10:30 am till 11:30 am

Former American Idol Top 10 Contestant Lazaro Arbos is in Miami to entertain students attending the annual educational high school rally.  Lazaro is just part of an hour-long program that includes hearing personal stories from formerly homeless individuals, interactive conversations about issues that homeless individuals and families face, and ways students can help end homelessness in Miami-Dade.

Tie-in Events

Organizations including schools, churches and non-profits will participate in their own tie-in events. Cardboard Brigades are scheduled at more than 65 Miami-Dade schools. In addition, churches and civic organizations mobilize volunteers to hand out Homeless Helpline cards and remind people about finding positive alternatives to panhandling. Locations forthcoming.
